The disturbing South Carolina Senate race has puzzled even the most clever of political commentators. How, everyone wonders, could an unknown, unemployed, South Carolina man facing a felony sex charge win an impressive 51% of the Democratic Senate primary? Vic Rawl, the defeated candidate, certainly expresses his skepticism in the validity of Green’s victory, along with South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn. The outcome of the situation, whether it be honest, yet certainly strange victory, or, more plausibly, a voting fraud, yields a terrible truth about American democracy: it does not work.

“This is not going to be the worst thing that’s ever happened to American,” Representative Parker Griffith, (M.D., R-Alabama , District 5), to BP CEO Tony Hayward, when Hayward appeared before Congress after President Obama’s speech addressing the nation about the Gulf oil leak.
Dr. Griffith told the listeners that cigarette smoking was a much greater threat. In doing so, he sided against the American public and especially against the conservative voters who put him into office after he switched parties, and left the Democrats on December 21, 2009.
